Alfred Elliot Lehman (June 15, 1924 – December 17, 2001) was an Emmy-winning costume designer.
A native of New York and graduate of New York’s High School of Art and Design and then attended the University of South California. Lehman served in the U.S. Army during World War II and after the war received bachelor and master of fine arts degrees from Carnegie-Mellon U, in Pittsburgh plus a diploma at Ecole de Coupe and a Certificate from the Sorbonne in Paris.
In 1953, Lehman joined ABC-TV in New York, where he designed for the various TV stars on “The Bell Telephone Hour,” “The Pat Boone Show” and numerous variety shows.
Additionally, Lehman designed costumes for five Off Broadway shows including “Leave It to Jane” and “Kittiwake Island.”
Lehman relocated to Los Angeles in 1968 and designed costumes for Red Skelton, “Laverne & Shirley,” “Barney Miller,” “Three’s Company,” “Simon and Simon” and many variety specials and pilots.
Emmy-nominated six times, Lehman won the award for the 1985-86 season of “Murder She Wrote.”
An educator as well as a costume designer, he taught at Carnegie-Mellon, where he also supervised costuming in the Drama Department. He also taught at design schools in Manhattan as well as serving as a guest lecturer at the American College in London, the Fashion Institute and Fashion Academy in Los Angeles and he taught at Woodbury U.
An active member of the community, he was a governor and on the awards committee of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and was a three-term president of the Costume Designers Guild.
He died Dec. 17 of cancer at his North Hollywood home. He was 77.
