Carl E. Beckstead (April 7, 1929 - October 10, 2019) taught school in Brantford and surrounding areas. He was very proud to be choir director and organist at Faith Lutheran church where he attended for many years. As requested by Carl a private family service was held.
In 1931, when Gavin Arthur and his friend, Carl Beckstead, began working on their Utopian Society, named "Moy Mell", within the dunes, the first order of importance was to build a cabin, one which would supply them with all the comforts of the outside life (minus running water and electricity). The ornate metal fireplace, one which had graced the family home in Montecito, became an object of curiosity to Gavin's fellow Dunites whose only fires were those made with whatever driftwood and brush that came their way.
Carl Beckstead passed away peacefully, after a lengthy illness, at St. Josephs Lifecare Centre, on October 10, 2019 at the age of 90 years. He was surivived by his partner of 19 years, Colin Mackie.
