Donald Gustave Schueler (born August 6, 1929) is the author of A Handmade Wilderness, Incident at Eagle Ranch: Predators as Prey in the American West, The Temple of the Jaguar: Travels in the Yucatan, and Adventuring along the Gulf of Mexico. He is a professor of medieval literature at the University of New Orleans. He is also one of the leading conservationists of the Central South. Apart from his scholarly publications and textbooks, he has written frequently for Audubon. His account of the rescue of the great southern swamp, Preserving the Pascagoula, was published in 1980.

Donald Gustave Schueler was born August 6, 1929, in New York City and was educated at the University of Georgia, where he received a B.A. He first saw New Orleans on a vacation trip in the early 1950s: We came to the corner of Esplanade and Royal, I looked down those streets, and right then I decided I was going to live here. I was 22 and good-looking, a big frog in a little pond. So I went back to New York, quit my job, and moved South. In 1964 Schueler met Willie Brown, who had grown up in a poor New Orleans family. Within a few years, the couple were fixing up a neglected 90 years old house in the city’s Garden District.

In 1968, Donald G. Schueler and Willie Brown bought 80 acres of worn-out land, known locally as the sandhills, about 25 miles from the Gulf Coast. It had been logged, burned and generally ravaged; it contained two bogs, a stand of live oaks and numerous ravines. They restored and named it The Place. They encountered moonshiners, poachers and snakes (Willie was terrified). Despite devastation by Hurricane Camille, the pair persevered, and eventually they brought back the native wildlife and plants, restoring a complete handmade ecosystem. After Willie's death in 1987, Schueler donated The Place, now 200 acres, to the Nature Conservancy as the Willie Farrell Brown Nature Reserve.
