Doris Fielding Reid (September 4, 1895 - January 16, 1973) was a stockbroker and former student of Edith Hamilton. Edith Hamilton was a German-American educator and author who was recognized as the greatest woman Classicist. She was 62 years old when "The Greek Way", her first book, was published in 1930. Hamilton dedicated the book to her companion Doris Fielding Reid.[1]
Doris Fielding Reid was the daughter of Harry Fielding Reid (May 18, 1859 – June 18, 1944), an American geophysicist, notable for his contributions to seismology, particularly his theory of elastic rebound that related faults to earthquakes, and Edith Gittings Reid, biographer of President Woodrow Wilson (a family friend), and physician, William Osler, famed as a medical historian and the creator of the residency program for young doctors.
After Hamilton’s retirement from Bryn Mawr School, Doris and Edith lived together at Edith's home in Mount Desert Island, Maine; Hamilton at home helping rising Reid’s nephew, Francis Dorian Fielding, who came to live with them. Dorian F. Reid (Amherst College '38, died Jan. 25, 2008) was born to Marie Magdalene Svensen and Francis Fielding Reid (Doris's brother, born in 1892) in Alexandria, VA, and adopted by Edith and Doris when he was four. He was home-schooled by Edith and Doris and lived with them at Sea Wall, ME, and Gramercy Park, Manhattan, NY.[2]
Reid and Hamilton, who became life partners and shared a home for the remainder of Hamilton's life, moved from Maine to New York City in 1924.[3][4]
Hamilton and Doris Reid remained in New York City until 1943, then moved to Washington, D.C., and spent their summers in Maine. In Washington, D.C., Reid was in charge of the local offices of Loomis, Sayles and Company, an investment firm that had been her employer since 1929.[5]

After Hamilton's death, in 1963, Reid published the book "Edith Hamilton: An Intimate Portrait".
Reid died on January 15, 1973, in Lenox Hill, New York. Both women are buried at Cove Cemetery in Hadlyme, Connecticut,[6][7] where Hamilton’s sisters had retired, in the same cemetery as Hamilton's mother (Gertrude) and her sisters (Alice, Norah, and Margaret), and Margaret's life partner, Clara Landsberg.
