Frederick Koester (born 1922) was arrested for cruising in Milwaukee as a young man. During the war Fred Koester moved from Milwaukee to New York City, where he lived on unemployment while getting started as an artist. The life of this person has been researched by Esther Newton for her essay: "Cherry Grove, Fire Island", published by Duke University Press.
