Husband Ulysses G. Dietz
Ulysses G. Dietz, a museum curator for 35 years, created the character of Desmond Beckwith in 1988 (Alyson Books, 1998). In 2012 he published a sequel to Desmond called Vampire in Suburbia set entirely in NJ. Dietz lives in Maplewood, suburban New Jersey with his partner since 1975, software engineer Gary Berger (born September 11, 1953), and their two adopted children, Grace and Alex. He is a great-great grandson of Ulysses S. Grant, and his mother was the President's last living great-grandchild. She died at 98 years old in 2014. Talking about their moving to Maplewood, Dietz said: “We expected we’d be all alone out here and just figured — being young and idealistic — that we’d be fine, and we always have been. We stayed where we were, and the town kind of evolved around us.” Now, there are two other male couples with adopted children on their block, he says. “It’s exactly the kind of community where we’d want to raise kids like ours.”
