Gerard de Vries (Hilversum, 19 August 1933 – Loosdrecht, 11 June 2015)[1] was a Dutch singer and disc jockey.
Gerard de Vries, alias "cowboy Gerard", became best known for his parlando music, with which he scored some big hits in the 1960s. Well-known hits of his are The Game of Cards from 1965 and Giddy up go from 1966. Many of his songs have life as a truck driver as their subject. Giddy up go and Teddy bear are examples of this. Often they are translations of songs by the popular American singer Red Sovine.
In addition to being a singer, Gerard de Vries was a disc jockey. He presented the country & western program "Nashville Tennessee" under the pseudonym 'Cowboy Gerard' and other programs under his own name, including Tineke de Nooij. With the Radio Veronica employees and disc jockeys Ad Bouman, Hans Mondt, Tom Collins and Klaas Vaak, he recorded the carnival hit "Met carnaval" in the early 1970s under the name De Binkies, which did not extend beyond the Tipparade. Later he went to work at the TROS. In 1972 he talked about Les Crane's English lyrics on his single "Desiderata". It became the B-side of the single released in the Netherlands. He was also active at the local broadcaster in Wijdemeren, Radio Wijdemeren.
After his career as a singer and disc jockey, De Vries became an entrepreneur in the paranormal industry. In 2007 he was briefly seen in the 'dating spectacle' of the television program Man bijt hond on Nederland 2. He had responded to a call from candidate 'Gijs', who was looking for a man. De Vries offered Gijs a self-written booklet entitled The Dutch Language.
