Johan Gerrit Mittertreiner (Weesp, 9 November 1915 - Amsterdam, 12 February 2009) was a Dutch ballet dancer.
Johan Mittertreiner started his dance career at the age of 15 as an amateur dancer. In 1937 he was accepted into Yvonne Georgi's dance company and danced there until the company was disbanded in 1944. After the war he performed in the first Bouwmeester Revue "Als de lichtjes weer branden gaan", and from 1947 he was a dancer in the companies De Amsterdamse Ballet Combinatie and the Ballet der Lage Landen, which after the merger with the Ballet of the Dutch Opera in 1959 continued as the Amsterdam Ballet[1]. In 1950 he had a role in the first post-war fairy tale film Myrte and the demons of Paul Schreiber. When the foundation of The Dutch National Ballet (the so-called ballet concentration) was being prepared in 1961, Johan accepted an invitation to take charge of the Johannesburg City Ballet in South Africa. This is not a resounding success. When he returned to Amsterdam in 1962, the foundation of the Dutch National Ballet was a fact. At first Johan has difficulty finding a connection with the company, eventually he was appointed in 1964 in a 'supporting position'. When he was appointed, it was made clear that he was not hired as a dancer and Johan understood that. Nevertheless, he returned to the scene a short time later due to circumstances. In the years that followed, Johan appeared in various roles in all major classical productions such as Het Heksenjong (The Witch Boy, 1964/1965), Romeo and Juliet (1967), Sleeping Beauty (master of ceremonies Cattalabutte), Giselle (the count) and Swan Lake (the house teacher Von Rasposen), until his farewell. He died on 12 February 2009 in Amsterdam, aged 93, and was cremated on 19 February in Crematorium De Nieuwe Ooster in Amsterdam. [2]
