Queer Places:
337 Marlborough St, Boston, MA 02115
On the night of December 9, 1953, John Effner, 22, of Lawrence, Michigan, met John Borland (1927 - December 10, 1953), 26, at a Boston bar. After a couple of drinks together, Borland invited Effner, who was stationed on the Baltimore, back to his rooming house at 337 Marlborough St, where around 1:30 in the morning Borland, according to Effner, made "improper advances" to him. Described by the Globe as tall, blonde, and handsome, Effner confessed he was so outraged that he bludgeoned Borland several times and fled the apartment but not before stealing Borland's watch, ring, and $2 from his wallet. Borland's body was found by his landlady the next day and his watch was traced to a Charlestown pawnshop which led the police to Effner. He confessed to the murder, telling the police he struck Borland two or three times with a homemade blackjack fashioned from wire, sheet metal, and lead.
