On March 22, 1874 with Théodore Sivel , he made a balloon climb at an altitude of 7,300 meters aboard the Polar Star .

On , he participated in the record flight duration of Zenith ( 22 h 40 ).

He died asphyxiated on , with captain Théodore Sivel during a new ascent aboard the Zenith, during which only Gaston Tissandier (1843 - 1899) was to survive. The ball landed brutally near Ciron in the Indre .

He is buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery , section 71, under a recumbent statue of Alphonse Dumilatre, who represents him lying on his back holding his unhappy comrade Sivel by the hand.

A street in the 14th arrondissement of Paris , rue Crocé-Spinelli , received its name in 1896.
