Lewis Clare Brown (October 4, 1928 - January 13, 2011) was an American theatrical costume designer. The Lewis Brown costume designs document his work with various regional theaters and television productions throughout the country. The work of Broadway's gay and lesbian artistic community went on display in 2007 when the Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation Gallery presents "StageStruck: The Magic of Theatre Design." The exhibit was conceived to highlight the achievements of gay and lesbian designers who work in conjunction with fellow gay and lesbian playwrights, directors, choreographers and composers. Original sketches, props, set pieces and models — some from private collections — represent the work of over 60 designers, including Lewis Brown.
Lewis Clare Brown was born on October 4, 1928 in Stockton, California. He studied art at UCLA.
After moving to New York City, he worked as a staff costume designer for NBC television from 1955 to 1964. He was also an active theatrical designer, working on shows for the New York Shakespeare Festival, the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, The Old Globe Theater in San Diego, and many other notable regional theaters.
He was a costume designer, known for Destini (1964), Mariti (1970) and The DuPont Show of the Week (1961).
He was awarded the 1973 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for Distinguished Costume Design for the play, "Cyrano De Bergerac," at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
He was awarded the 1995 Drama Logue Award for Costume Design for "Candide," at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
Robin Wagner and Lewis Brown were among the 2011 TDF/Irene Sharaff Awards recipients. Sadly, Brown passed away in January of 2011. His award was accepted by his long-time colleague and friend, Albert Wolsky, who was the recipient of the 2010 TDF/Irene Sharaff Lifetime Achievement Award.
Lewis Brown died in January 13, 2011 in New York, New York, USA.
