Lyulph Henry Victor Owen Stanley, 7th Baron Sheffield was born on 22 October 1915. He was the son of Arthur Lyulph Stanley, 5th Baron Sheffield and Margaret Evelyn Gordon.1 He died on 23 June 1971 at age 55, unmarried. Both Stanley family biographies, published by family members, mention that Lyulph was gay. His valet for a time was Patrick Nelson.
He was educated at Saint Ronan's School and Eton College, and then attended Balliol College, Oxford. He was a BBC Home Service Announcer between 1945 and 1947. He was a Public Information Officer with the United Nations between 1948 and 1957. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. He succeeded as the 7th Baron Sheffield, of Roscommon, co. Roscommon, the 6th Baron Eddisbury of Winnington, co. Chester, the 13th Baronet Stanley, of Alderley, and the 7th Baron Stanley of Alderley, co. Chester on 3 March 1971.
