BURIED TOGETHER

Partner Katherine Courtauld

Queer Places:
Knights Farm in Colne Engaine, Essex
St Andrew Church Colne Engaine, Braintree District, Essex, England

Mary Gladstone (December, 1856 - November 15, 1941) was the longtime companion of Katherine Courtauld. Reginald Bell's 1935 Sower and Reaper window, also used at Ellingham in Norfolk, depicts the sower and the reaping angel in front of Colne Engaine church. It remembers Katherine Courtauld, a gift from her devoted partner Mary Gladstone. As Gladstone's memorial across the church reminds us, Mary and Katherine were in a relationship all their adult lives, and lived together at Knights Farm. It is one of three mid-20th Century memorials to female couples, and all of them are in this part of north Essex.

Mary Gladstone was born in Dec 1856 in Kings Norton, the daughter of Thomas Gladstone (1820-1904) and Mary Gibbons Whitfield (1824-1865). She died in 1941. She left everything to Thomas Hugh Gladstone and Maud Neville.
