Michel Larivière (pseudonym of Michel Soulez Larivière), born May 23, 1934, is a French writer author of several books on homosexuality and bisexuality, especially in history and culture.
Son of Furcy Soulez and his wife, née Larivière, Michel Larivière was the elder brother of lawyer Daniel Soulez Larivière and the first cousin of philosopher Philippe Soulez. After literary studies, completed with a certificate of license in literature, Michel Larivière was a laureate in the competition of the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique, and trainee for three years at the Comédie-Française. He played Les Fourberies de Scapin with Robert Hirsch in 1958 at the Théâtre français, Oscar with Louis de Funès in 1961 at the Porte Saint Martin, and Tartuffe with Francis Blanche in 1962 at the Palais-Royal. He has also appeared in a few films, including Lagardère, with Jean Piat, and Les malheurs de Sophie by Jean-Claude Brialy. Hired at the O.R.T.F. in 1963, he worked for Georges-Emmanuel Clancier, Director of the Central Projects Service, with responsibility for the selection of dramatic and historical film projects, and ended his career as a civil servant in 1976. After the break-up of the ORTF, he devoted himself to historical research on homosexuality and male bisexuality. From 2009 to 2013, Michel Larivière wrote a monthly column in the magazine Têtu: "We hid it from you at school". He is also an occasional speaker. In 2016, the parts of his book Women of Famous Homosexuals devoted to Jules Verne were criticized by Laurence Sudret, who, in an article in the Bulletin de la Société Jules Verne, evoked his "superficiality" and his "lack of scientific rigour".
Since 2015, he has participated in the television show Secrets d'histoire presented by Stéphane Bern. He notably collaborated on an issue devoted to Louis XIV, entitled Louis XIV, l'homme et le roi, broadcast on September 1, 2015 on France 2. He also participated in an issue dedicated to Wallis Simpson, entitled Wallis: the sulphurous Duchess of Windsor broadcast on September 6, 2016 on France 2.
