Partner Mirkka Rekola
Maire Mirjam Polkunen (2 March 1926, Jyväskylä – 22 June 2012, Helsinki)[1][2]) was a Finnish literary scholar, writer, translator and dramaturg, with a bachelor's degree in philosophy. Polkunen began her literary career as a poet, but her influence on Finnish cultural life has been most significant in various positions in the media. Mirjam Polkunen's life partner was Mirkka Rekola.[4]
Polkunen was the editor-in-chief of yle's literary and art programmes since 1965 and the head of the theatre department since 1974. She worked as a dramaturg in countless productions of the Finnish Broadcasting Company. Polkunen was also the editorial editor of the novels The Lost Garden, The Village Roses and The New Adam, written long ago by Helvi Hämäläinen. Hämäläinen probably wrote the novels already in the 1950s, but they were rejected by the publisher. The novels were not published until the 1990s, edited by Polkunen, when Hämäläinen had given the manuscripts to her to work on years earlier. Polkunen received the Eino Leino Prize in 1969 and the Arvid Lydecken Prize in 1970.[1] In 1972, she was also awarded the Mikael Agricola Prize for the Finnish translation of Italo Svevo's book Zeno's Recognitions.[3]
