Norval Murray Service was born on January 8, 1905, in Salt Lake City, to William and Elizaberh Kollis Service. He married Audrey Claire Rager on June 27, 1930, in Salt Lake City. He was a member of the LDS Church and retired from Utah State Highway Department, purchasing department. He was also a former employee of Utah Builders Supply.

According to the rumors, Joseph Fielding Smith was in a relationship with Norval Service when the latter was a student at the University of Utah.
