Partner Jaap Harten

Oskar Lens (1930 - October, 2017) was born in Hilversum and grew up in Blaricum. He later moved to The Hague, where lived together with Jaap Harten, whom he already knew from his youth.

After his education at the 'Nieuwe Lyceum' he completed his law studies in Utrecht. On the advice of painters such as Jaap Nanninga, Theo Bitter and others, he visited the Vrije Academie in the evenings. At the age of 33 he decided to quit his job to devote himself entirely to painting. Initially Oskar Lens painted abstractly with ink and also lacquer on paper and with little color. Although critics responded well to this work, the need arose to paint more figuratively and also more colorfully. As a subject he chose people, mostly women in special situations, such as at fashion shows, in museums or in the kitchen. Few painters will venture into the brightness of color for which Lens shows a predilection in his paintings from the outset. He is not concerned with working out what he perceives, but with the painterly pleasure.
