Øivind Eckhoff (born 13 January 1916 in Kristiania , died 21 January 2001 in Oslo) was a Norwegian pianist and music researcher. In 1957 he published Norway's first scientific book on homosexuality. Rolf Løvaas was one of the early pioneers in Norwegian gay movement and was particularly active in the 1950s. In the spring of 1950, he was one of the founders of and the first chairman of what was initially a section of the Danish Association of 1948. In the autumn of 1951 came the Association's first brochure, "Hva vil vil" , which Rolf Løvaas had prepared together with Øivind Eckhoff .
Eckhoff's parents were literary historian, Professor Lorentz Eckhoff (1884–1974) and teacher Halldis Bomhoff (1885–1963).[2] He cohabited in 1949–66 with sociologist Arne Heli.
Eckhoff was an amanuensis in musicology at the University of Oslo 1965–1983. He started playing the piano when he was seven years old. He made his piano debut in Oslo on 30 November 1945, and he took a music pedagogical exam at the Conservatory of Music in Copenhagen in 1953. From 1942 to 1960 he was associated with the Riefling Piano Institute as a piano pedagogue, and appeared several times on NRK radio as a pianist.
Øivind Eckhoff also left his mark in the fight for gay liberation. He was involved from the very beginning of the Norwegian Association of 1948, and sat on the board for a while. In 1957 he published the book We who feel different. Homosexuality and society. The book wants to explain the causes of homosexuality, as well as to clarify the difficult situation and place of homosexuals in society. The book was published under the pseudonym Finn Grodal. We who feel different is Norway's first scientific book on homosexuality and one of the few Norwegian textbooks written on the subject.[3] With this book, the terms homosexual and heterosexual were introduced to the Norwegian public.[3] Heli helped collect relevant literature and the letters to "Finn Grodal" from people all over the country. Heli writes about both the cohabitation relationship and the creation of We who feel different in the book Open about the forbidden.
