James J. "Ryan" Field (February 1, 1960 - November 20, 2023) was the author of over 100 published works of LGBT fiction, the bestselling Virgin Billionaire series, a pg rated hetero romance that was featured on The Home Shopping Network titled, Loving Daylight, and a few more works of full-length fiction with a pen name. He worked in publishing for twenty years as a writer, editor, and associate editor. His work had been in Lambda Award winning anthologies and he self-published a few novels with Ryan Field Press. He met Tony Marchesani (born October, 1965) in 1992 and being together since then. They shared homes in New Hope, Pennsylvania, Miami Beach, Florida, and Palm Springs, California, and had poodles they considered part of their family. Ryan and Tony liked to entertain friends in front of the home fire in their Pennsylvania home, while outside the snow blankets the grounds.
Talking about their relationship, Field said: We do not have many photos taken together because the opportunity never comes up. Since we never thought gay marriage would become a reality on our lifetimes back in 1992, we decided early on to take the night we met as our anniversary like other gay couples we know. And as we wait to see if Pennsylvania will legalize same sex marriage like other states in the US, we will continue to keep that date in December as our official anniversary forever. The marriage certificate is important to us for equal rights and for legal reasons. We have earned it like all other gay couples. But after being together for twenty-one years we have also learned you don't always need a piece of paper to stay together for better or for worse. It is what you feel deep in your heart during the good times and the bad times that matters most. For your 21st anniversary, we went to a local restaurant. Did not think anything unusual. Nice dinner, quiet. No big deal. After the check comes, I see three friends come in. I figure they stopped in for a drink on the way home from a party. Next thing I know a cake with "Marry Me" comes out and then two gold wedding bands. Turns out Tony and the three friends planned the whole thing and I had absolutely no idea at all. And, he planned a wedding in Vermont in January 2014.
James J. Field was born in East Orange, NJ to James B. Field and Arline Popick. The family moved to Penns Grove, NJ where he grow up most of his life, when his late father accepted employment as the Superintendent of Schools for Salem County, NJ. Ryan graduated from St. James High School then attended Fairleigh Dickinson University and received his Bachelor's in English. Throughout his life he dedicated himself to his writing, every day for over 25 years he wrote and perfected his art. He worked with many publishers, in particular Lori Perkins, and received awards for his talent, one in which he was proud to accept was the Lambda Award winning anthology titled "Best Gay Erotica 2009". Though not always, he sometimes wrote gay parodies of straight mainstream fiction. He also wrote hetero romances with pen names, and has edited several short story anthologies. Early on he recognized change in the publishing industry and branched out on his own and self-published his work alongside traditional publishing. "Chase of a Lifetime," was his first self-published Amazon Kindle book and since has over 150 works of lgbt fiction, some with pen names in various sub-genres e-published.
He enjoyed training dogs, participating in his younger years in dog show competitions. Ryan lived his whole life without ever not having a dog. His passion for dogs and a cat (Nittney) was throughout his life, his favorites being his miniature Poodles; Kipper, Lexi and Jax, to him they were his children and spoiled them as if they were.
On December 6, 1992 Ryan met his love for life, Nino Marchesani, Jr., and together weathered life's ups and downs. They purchased their first home in Newtown, PA and after a short 5 years decided to move to a townhome in the nearby town of New Hope, PA. There he owned several business, in New Hope, PA, Lambertville, NJ and Palm Springs, CA. His favorite being Blue Ribbon Gallery of fine Arts and Antiques, 3 Cranes Condo Rental, LLC, a gourmet coffee house, and a tanning salon, Tan 2000, Inc. They finally settled in a single home which he named Pachysandra Garden because of its acres of lush Pachysandra covered property. They lived there for 18 years. On January 28, 2015, after accepting a marriage proposal, he was legally married to Nino Marchesani Jr. at a quaint B&B in the small town of Montgomery, VT. This milestone was performed months prior to same sex marriage becoming legal in the USA in June 2015. What made this day forever memorable was their ceremony was part of a documentary named 'State of Marriage', in it focused on the beginnings of the legalization of gay marriage and in particular Beth Robinson's role. The Honorable Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court served, in her earlier career, as co-counsel in the case of Baker v. State, the landmark 1999 decision that led to Vermont becoming the first state to enact civil unions. They were honored to have Beth Robinson perform the marriage ceremony and sign the Certificate of Marriage.
Ryan had his favorite places to visit, Provincetown, MA being the most favored, he and Nino would travel there at least 3 times a year, but fulltime living there was not an option giving its remoteness and long winter months. He also loved to travel to Newport, RI and fantasized about living there, but he settled on Palm Springs after falling in love with the Southwest of the USA. Ryan was not one to jump without knowing, after visiting Palm Springs, they decided to purchase a small condo which afforded them to live bi-coastal. After three years, it was decided to make a life change and move to California permanently.
Ryan Field died peacefully in the arms of his husband, Nino Marchesani, Jr. of 31 years on November, 20, 2023.
